About Me

I am a professional violinist offering violin and viola lessons for all ages in and around the Hitchin area. I teach from my home in Hitchin and can also teach online on Zoom.

I have been involved in many outreach projects and have led workshops in primary schools. I have also performed for King Charles III. I love working with children and adults and have lots of patience and enthusiasm. I am friendly, positive, and motivating, and am keen to make lessons fun.

As well as teaching from home, I also teach in schools as a peripatetic violin teacher, and run various Hertfordshire Music Service groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

I teach children from five years old, and adults of all ages. The main criteria for a child is that he/she can concentrate for thirty minutes, and is able to understand and follow instructions.

I currently teach on both weekdays and weekends from 9am to 8pm.

I have an enhanced DBS check which is renewed every year, as well as safeguarding training (certificates can be shown on request).

In order to make good progress, you will need your own instrument (or a hired instrument) to regularly practise at home.

Adults will need a full-size violin. For children there are a variety of sizes to choose from. Violin size is determined by the child’s arm length, not the child’s age.

I recommend visiting Howard Hill at Hill and Company, 5 High Street, Welwyn, Herts AL6 9EE. He provides a friendly and efficient service, and will help you find the violin you need.

Alternatively, you can rent or buy a violin at Studio Violins,
94 Tilehouse Street, Hitchin, Herts SG5 2DW.

I will have teaching materials ready for the first few lessons and after this I will advise you on a tutor book to purchase.

I have two small violins for children which can be used in the first few lessons, but you will not be able to take these instruments home.

I can teach adults all year-round if required.

Most children stop when the school term stops, although I can teach in school holidays by arrangement.

I teach a wide variety of styles including classical, jazz, blues, rock, and pop.

Students who wish to take practical exams (ABRSM and Trinity) can do so, whilst those who want to learn for pleasure are equally welcome.

Please let me know at least six hours in advance of the lesson by phone, email or text and you will not be charged for the lesson.  If notice is received later than this, you will be charged for the lesson.

I require four weeks’ notice if you wish to terminate lessons.

Yes, I offer a taster lesson with no ongoing obligation. This lesson is charged at the normal lesson rate and is payable on the day of the lesson.

I issue invoices before the start of each half term, with the dates for that half term listed. I require payment in full on or before the first lesson of each half term.  Bank transfer payments are the most convenient, but you can pay by cash or cheque if you prefer.

Possibly straight away! Get in touch to see what spaces are available.
